Overview

Receiving Intelligence evaluates:

  • wide receivers;
  • tight ends;
  • running backs as receivers.

All three positions are described through the same receiving concepts:

  • Role;
  • Volume;
  • Efficiency;
  • After Catch;
  • Production.

However, the positions are not placed into one common league-wide comparison.

Each position is evaluated within its own positional environment so that the model reflects the different responsibilities and usage patterns of NFL wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.

Why Positions Are Evaluated Separately

Receiving roles differ substantially by position.

Wide receivers generally operate as the primary downfield and perimeter targets within an offense.

Tight ends often combine receiving responsibilities with inline alignment, blocking assignments and different route usage.

Running backs typically receive targets from the backfield and often create receiving production through screens, check-downs and designed short-area opportunities.

Comparing all three positions within one common population would therefore create misleading conclusions.

NFL Fantasy Mate keeps the analytical language consistent while adapting the comparison to each position.

Wide Receivers

Wide receivers are evaluated against other wide receivers across the league.

Their Receiving Intelligence profile describes:

  • how consistently they participate in the passing offense;
  • how much receiving opportunity they command;
  • how effectively they convert that opportunity;
  • how much value they create after the catch;
  • how much receiving production they deliver.

The wide receiver model provides the standard structure used by live Receiving Intelligence.

Tight Ends

Tight ends use the same live receiving category structure as wide receivers.

The important difference is the comparison population.

Tight ends are evaluated only against other tight ends across the league.

This allows the scores to reflect the characteristics of the position rather than comparing tight ends directly with wide receivers, whose route volume and offensive usage are often different.

A tight end and a wide receiver may therefore record similar raw production but receive different analytical evaluations because each is being judged within his own position.

Running Backs as Receivers

Running backs are included in Receiving Intelligence because they compete for targets and contribute directly to the passing offense.

However, their receiving profile is evaluated only against other running backs.

The model places greater emphasis on involvement and receiving opportunity, reflecting the importance of identifying which backs are consistently used in the passing game.

After Catch remains visible as receiving information, but it does not contribute to the running back Receiving Overall Score.

This prevents backfield screens and short-area receptions from having an excessive influence on the final receiving evaluation.

Receiving Intelligence vs Rushing Intelligence for Running Backs

A running back may appear in both Receiving Intelligence and Rushing Intelligence.

This is intentional.

Receiving Intelligence

Evaluates the player only as a receiver within the passing game.

Receiving Intelligence asks

How well is this running back performing as a pass catcher?

Rushing Intelligence

Evaluates the complete running back profile, including:

  • rushing workload;
  • rushing efficiency;
  • receiving contribution;
  • offensive dominance;
  • realized production.
Rushing Intelligence asks

How well is this player performing as a running back overall?

The Receiving Intelligence score should therefore not be treated as the running back's complete evaluation.

Position Differences in Team Context

Team Context measures offensive hierarchy within the player's own team rather than league-wide quality.

Wide receivers and tight ends use the same Team Context category structure.

Running backs receive a position-specific Team Context treatment that places greater emphasis on receiving involvement and opportunity while excluding After Catch from the final Team Context score.

The purpose remains consistent across positions:

How important is this player within his team's passing offense?

Team Context and Overall Score remain independent, even when their category names appear similar.

Same Category Name, Position-Specific Meaning

The category names remain consistent because they describe the same broad football concepts.

However, their interpretation should reflect the player's position.

Role

  • For wide receivers and tight ends, Role reflects consistent participation as a receiving option.
  • For running backs, Role reflects participation in the passing game rather than total backfield workload.

Volume

  • For wide receivers and tight ends, Volume reflects their share of the passing offense.
  • For running backs, Volume identifies receiving opportunity relative to other backs.

Efficiency

  • For all positions, Efficiency describes how effectively receiving opportunities are converted.
  • The player is always compared within his own positional population.

After Catch

  • After Catch is meaningful for every receiving position.
  • It contributes to the wide receiver and tight end Overall profiles.
  • It remains descriptive but does not contribute to the running back Receiving Overall Score.

Production

  • Production measures realized receiving output.
  • It does not include a running back's rushing production within Receiving Intelligence.

Why Overall Scores Across Positions Should Not Be Compared Directly

A Receiving Overall Score of 80 for a wide receiver and 80 for a tight end do not mean that the players produced identical statistics or performed identical roles.

They mean that each player recorded a similarly strong receiving profile relative to his own position.

The same principle applies to running backs.

Cross-position overall scores can provide broad context, but they should not be interpreted as direct statistical equivalents. Team Score is the one which should be used for cross-position comparisons.

How to Use Position Differences

  1. Confirm the player's receiving position.
  2. Interpret the Overall Score within that positional group.
  3. Review the categories according to the responsibilities of the position.
  4. Use Team Context to understand the player's importance within his own offense.
  5. For running backs, review Rushing Intelligence separately before evaluating the complete player.
  6. Avoid comparing raw category scores across positions as though they describe identical usage.

What Position Differences Do Not Mean

Position-specific evaluation does not mean that NFL Fantasy Mate lowers the standard for one position.

It means the model evaluates players according to comparable positional responsibilities.

The objective is not to make every position look equal.

The objective is to make every comparison meaningful.

The category language remains consistent, but every player is evaluated within the positional environment that best reflects his NFL role.
