Overview

Receiving Intelligence evaluates every player through six independent analytical categories.

Each category measures a different aspect of receiving performance.

Together they provide a balanced view of how a player earns opportunities, converts them into production and contributes to his offense.

The categories are:

  • Role
  • Volume
  • Efficiency
  • After Catch
  • Production
  • Overall Score

Each category is evaluated independently before being combined into the Overall Score.

A player does not need to excel in every category to receive a strong overall evaluation.

Why Two Sets of Categories?

At first glance, the Overall Score and Team Context use categories with the same names, such as Role, Volume, Efficiency, After Catch and Production.

Although the names are the same, they belong to two independent analytical models and should not be interpreted in the same way.

The Overall categories compare players with every other player at the same position across the league.

The Team Context categories compare a player only with his own teammates to measure his role within the offense.

Because the objective is different, the categories answer different questions.

Overall categories

How good is this player compared with others at the same position across the league?

They measure league-wide receiving quality and compare wide receivers with wide receivers, tight ends with tight ends and receiving running backs with other receiving running backs.

Team Context categories

How important is this player within his own offense?

They measure offensive hierarchy and compare the player only with the relevant teammates competing for opportunities in the same team environment.

Neither model is more important than the other.

They describe different aspects of the player's situation.

A receiver may rank among the league's best while sharing opportunities with another elite teammate, producing a very strong Overall profile but a more balanced Team Context profile.

Another receiver may dominate his own passing offense and produce an outstanding Team Context profile while remaining only average compared with the rest of the league.

Using both perspectives together provides a more complete understanding than either one alone.

Two Perspectives, Same Language

To keep the platform intuitive, NFL Fantasy Mate uses the same category names in both models.

  • Role always describes offensive involvement.
  • Volume always describes opportunity.
  • Efficiency always describes how effectively opportunities are converted.
  • After Catch always describes value created after the reception.
  • Production always describes realized offensive output.

What changes is the comparison group.

In the Overall model, the categories describe how the player compares with league-wide positional peers.

In the Team Context model, the same category names describe how the player compares with his own teammates.

This consistent terminology allows users to interpret both models through the same football concepts while understanding that they answer different analytical questions.

Role

In the Overall model, Role measures the player's offensive involvement compared with league-wide peers at the same position.

It focuses on offensive involvement rather than fantasy production.

Players with a strong Role typically:

  • remain on the field consistently;
  • participate in a large share of passing plays;
  • occupy an important position within the receiving structure.

A strong Role often provides a stable foundation for future production, although it does not guarantee fantasy success on its own.

Volume

Volume measures how many receiving opportunities a player earns.

It reflects the offense's willingness to involve the player as a receiver.

Higher Volume generally indicates:

  • more targets;
  • greater receiving opportunity;
  • increased chances to produce fantasy points.

Volume evaluates opportunity, not efficiency.

A player may receive many opportunities while converting them poorly, or fewer opportunities while making exceptional use of them.

Efficiency

Efficiency measures how effectively the player converts receiving opportunities into positive production.

Highly efficient receivers maximise the value of each opportunity.

Strong Efficiency often reflects players who consistently generate productive plays without relying solely on high target volume.

Efficiency therefore complements Volume rather than replacing it.

After Catch

After Catch evaluates what happens once the reception has already been made.

It focuses on the player's ability to create additional value after securing the football.

Strong After Catch performance often reflects:

  • additional yardage after the catch;
  • reliable ball security;
  • meaningful contribution after the initial reception.

Because it measures a specialised aspect of receiving, After Catch should be interpreted alongside the other receiving categories rather than in isolation.

Production

Production measures the player's realised receiving output.

It reflects the fantasy-relevant results generated by the player's receiving profile.

Production rewards players who consistently translate their role, opportunity and efficiency into measurable on-field production.

Because fantasy football ultimately rewards production, this category represents the outcome created by the other underlying dimensions.

Overall Score

The Overall Score combines the six categories into one complete receiving evaluation.

It should be interpreted as a balanced summary rather than as a replacement for the individual categories.

Players with identical Overall Scores may have very different analytical profiles.

For example:

  • one player may rely on elite Volume;
  • another may depend on outstanding Efficiency;
  • another may combine balanced strengths across every category.

Reviewing the individual categories helps explain why two similar Overall Scores may represent very different types of players.

Categories and Team Context

Team Context uses the same football concepts but applies them to a different comparison.

Instead of asking how the player compares with league-wide positional peers, Team Context asks how he compares with the relevant teammates in his own offense.

This means a high Team Context Role, Volume or Production score reflects control within the team environment, not necessarily elite performance across the league.

Team Context asks

How important is this player within his own offense?

The Overall and Team Context profiles should therefore be read together, but never treated as interchangeable.

Categories and Trend Strength

The category scores describe the player's current receiving profile.

Trend Strength describes whether each category is improving or declining over time.

Together they answer two different questions:

  • How strong is the category today?
  • Where is the category moving?

Using both provides a more complete understanding than relying on either one alone.

How to Use the Categories

  1. Review the Overall Score.
  2. Identify the strongest and weakest categories.
  3. Compare the profile with Team Context.
  4. Review Trend Strength to see whether the categories are improving or declining.
  5. Use Baseline and Projection to place the current profile into broader context.

What the Categories Are Not

The categories are not independent player rankings.

They are individual measurements of different aspects of receiving performance.

Their purpose is to explain why a player receives his Overall Score rather than simply reporting a single final number.

Remember

Overall Score tells you how strong the receiving profile is. The individual categories explain what is creating that profile.
