Each season is compared exclusively with other historical tight end seasons.

Relationship with Historical Wide Receivers

Historical Tight Ends follows the same broad receiving framework used for Historical Wide Receivers.

Both models evaluate completed seasons through:

• Role;
• Volume;
• Efficiency;
• After Catch;
• Production.

The meaning of each category remains consistent.

The important differences are:

• tight ends are compared only with other tight ends;
• the completed-season profile is balanced specifically for the tight end position;
• offensive participation receives greater importance within the final evaluation.

This allows the model to preserve a consistent receiving language without treating wide receiver and tight end seasons as equivalent.

Why Tight Ends Have Their Own Historical Model

Tight ends often operate under different offensive responsibilities from wide receivers.

Their receiving involvement may be affected by:

• alignment within the formation;
• blocking responsibilities;

• competition with both receivers and other tight ends.

The category meanings are shared with Historical Wide Receivers, but every score is calculated within the historical tight end population.

Historical Overall Score

The Historical Tight End Overall Score summarises the complete completed-season profile.

It places greater importance on offensive participation than the Historical Wide Receiver model, reflecting the different ways tight ends contribute within NFL offenses.

The individual category scores should still be reviewed alongside the Historical Overall Score.

Two tight ends may receive similar Overall Scores while producing very different profiles.

For example:

• one may be driven by consistent Role and Volume;
• another may rely more heavily on Efficiency and Production;
• another may show balanced strength across every category.

Top Competitor

Historical Tight Ends includes Top Competitor context.

This identifies the strongest eligible wide receiver or tight end competing within the same passing offense during the selected season.

Top Competitor helps explain whether the tight end produced within:

• an offense containing another major receiving option;
• a more favourable environment with limited receiving competition.

Running backs are not considered eligible Top Competitors because their offensive responsibilities differ from those of primary pass catchers.

Top Competitor provides context only. It does not alter the Historical Overall Score.

A Historical Overall Score of 80 for a tight end and 80 for a wide receiver do not represent identical statistics or offensive responsibilities.
